NewsHound 2.0 has full support for downloading headers, rather than full articles. This can be advantageous if you subscribe to a large number of newsgroups and you generally don't read every article. It can also minimize online time if you use a dial-up connection to the internet, which in turn can reduce your costs if you pay by the minute for calls. It can also keep costs down if you are traveling and using a hotel phone, or a cellular modem where you are charged for the amount of data you download.

When you download headers, only the sender's name, email address and the article's subject is available for viewing. To distinguish a header from a full article, headers use a different icon, as shown in the screen shot below:

NewsHound provides two ways to obtain the full text of an article represented by a header. The first, and most convenient way, is to use NewsHound's "automatic article retrieval for headers" feature. If you want to view the complete text of a newsgroup for which you only have a header, simply click on the header (or use the keyboard) and NewsHound will automatically download the text for you and display it in the reading pane. This mode requires an online connection, and works best if you have a high speed internet connection although it is usable on any type of connection.

The second way to obtain the full text of an article represented by a header, is to "mark" the headers you want to read, and then initiate another online session where NewsHound will retrieve the full articles for the headers you have marked. This method requires more steps than the automatic retrieval mode, but may be more convenient if you use a dial-up internet connection or you need to minimize the time you spend online. To mark a header for retrieval, highlight the header and then select "Mark for download" from the Actions menu or the context menu, as shown below:

You can also mark the entire conversation in which the selected header is a part of.

A header that has been "marked" has a yellow arrow on its icon, indicating that it will be downloaded:

Headers can be enabled or disabled on an individual newsgroup basis. This allows you to download full articles in groups where you normally read all (or most) messages, and headers in groups where you normally do not read all messages.
