Change History

3.0.0.47 - 6/22/09

  1. Added the ability to retrieve messages from Microsoft's web-based forums (social.microsoft.com, social.msdn.microsoft.com, etc.).

2.1.0.45 - 11/28/06

  1. Fixed compatibility issues with Windows Vista.

2.0.2.44 - 9/06/06

  1. Updated installer to properly detect Outlook 2007.
  2. Fixed some issues related to changes in Outlook 2007.
  3. Fixed a minor formatting issue when displaying newsgroup articles in HTML.

2.0.2.43 - 7/13/05

  1. Fixed a bug that could cause a problem when creating a new message or reply in HTML mode.
  2. Fixed a bug that could cause NewsHound to store an incorrect message ID when downloading headers. This would cause NewsHound to display "Article no longer exists on server" when attempting to retrieve the full article.
  3. Added some additional error handling to trap network errors when storing articles in an Exchange mailbox.

2.0.2.37 - 2/26/05

  1. Fixed a bug when replying to very large articles in HTML format.
  2. Fixed a bug in the address book provider that would occur under rare circumstances.

2.0.1.33 - 12/14/04

  1. If a newsgroup folder was moved outside of the main Newsgroups folder, an assertion failure could occur when clicking on that folder in the folder pane. This could have happened for example, if you dragged a newsgroup folder into the Deleted Items folder.
  2. An error could occur during the sorting of a newly downloaded newsgroups list if the data received from the server was corrupted.
  3. If the NewsHound online progress window was open, the initial Outlook window was closed and other Outlook windows were open, various assertion failures would occur as the contents of the online progress window was open (invalid parent window handles and similar errors), or when the online progress window was closed.

2.0.0.31 - 10/28/04

  1. Fixed a bug when creating a new newsgroup message in html format with a signature
  2. Fixed a bug where the newsgroup name was not being recognized in the To field in a reply or new newsgroup article, if the newsgroup name contained any uppercase letters

2.0.0.29 - 10/24/04 - Major New Release!

  1. The major new feature in NewsHound 2.0 is full support for downloading headers instead of full articles.
  2. There is a new Newsgroup Management dialog, available from the NewsHound menu, which allows you to set various options for each newsgroup you are subscribed to.
  3. Newsgroup account and group folders can now be renamed. In previous versions, NewsHound looked for its folders by name and if you renamed a folder, it would create a new one with the default name.
  4. An improvement in article download speed, most noticeably in folders that contain a large number of articles.
  5. NewsHound now creates a new message view called "Internet Newsgroups", and initially sets all newly created newsgroup folders to use this view. This view is ordered by conversation and only includes columns that are relevant to newsgroup postings. You can modify this view, or set any newsgroup folder to use a different view. This does not affect any already existing newsgroup folders, although you can manually set any existing folders to this new view. Note: this is only implemented on Outlook 2003.
  6. Article / header retrieval is multi-threaded. If you have more than one account set up, NewsHound will retrieve new posts concurrently on each account. Currently, only one connection is made for each account. This will probably be enhanced in a future version to allow multiple concurrent connections per account.
  7. The NewsHound menu and the Options dialog have been reorganized.
  8. NewsHound can now post newsgroup articles in HTML format. This is turned off by default (on the New Posts/Replies tab of the options dialog). Use this as your own risk... you may get flamed in certain newsgroups if you post in HTML format.
  9. You can now schedule automatic article retrieval using the Windows task scheduler. NewsHound only gives you the option of retrieving new articles/headers every x minutes. If you want more control over that, you can use the Windows task scheduler. The entry for the "Run" field on the Task tab of the scheduled task must contain the following line: rundll32 "c:\program files\newshound\newshound32.dll",Retrieve If you installed NewsHound in a different location, adjust the entry accordingly. You can set all of the other settings to whatever you want. Note that this will only work while Outlook is running. If the scheduled task runs while Outlook is not running, nothing will happen. (a future version may start Outlook automatically in the background).
  10. A new option on New Posts/Replies options dialog page: Place signature: below OR above quoted text. In newsgroup-speak, this is commonly referred to as "bottom posting" or "top posting".
  11. Secure connections to newsgroup servers are now fully supported, using the SSL 2.0, 3.0 and TLS 1.0 protocols. New options for this are on the Advanced tab in the account setup dialog.

Bug fixes (since version 1.1.4.21):

  1. The Followup-To: header is now properly handled for replies. If you reply to a newsgroup article and the reply is addressed to different newsgroups than the original message, it is because the original poster requested that replies go to one or more specific newsgroups, which may or may not include the group(s) where the article was originally posted. This is usually done to redirect replies to a more appropriate newsgroup.
  2. Fixed some listview display wierdness on Windows 2000 in the online progress window
  3. Fixed a bug that prevented the notification of new newsgroups, if you have that option turned on.
  4. Fixed a bug that prevented the newsgroup listing from being saved if the server did not support the "LIST NEWSGROUPS" command.
  5. Improved handling for corrupted or malformed article headers.
  6. Better handling of quirky newsgroup servers.

1.1.4.21 - 7/11/04

  1. Added a "Retrieve New Articles in this Newsgroup" item on the Actions menu. This menu item is only visible when a newsgroup folder is selected.
  2. Changed the default codepage in HTML newsgroup articles to iso-8859-1 if no codepage was specified in the article header, so non-ASCII characters have a better chance of being displayed correctly
  3. yEnc encoded files are now detected and saved as attachments
  4. The "From: " header in outgoing articles is now properly encoded when characters outside the standard ASCII range are entered in the "user name" field in the newsgroup server account dialog

1.1.3.18 - 6/18/04

  1. Fixed a problem that would prevent NewsHound from installing on Windows 98 if shfolder.dll was not installed
  2. Fixed a problem introduced in version 1.1 that prevented signatures from being edited
  3. Fixed a non-fatal error message that could occur if you were connected to an Exchange server, but the server was offline
  4. Fixed a non-fatal error message that could occur if you opened a second Outlook window under certain conditions

1.1.2.17 - 6/02/04

  1. Fixed an error that could occur at startup if the main menu bar was customized and had a certain type of control on it.

1.1.1.16 - 6/01/04

  1. An error message would appear if NewsHound downloaded a newsgroup article that used a charcter set that you did not have installed, and for which the default translation was inappropriate. For example, if a newsgroup article was posted using the ISO-2022-JP character set and you did not have the Japanese fonts installed, NewsHound would raise an error. NewsHound now handles this silently, and attempts to do the conversion using the default codepage installed on your system.

1.1.0.15 - 5/28/04

  1. Added the ability to "colorize" newsgroup articles.
  2. If you moved the NewsHound menu from the menu bar to a toolbar, one or more errors would occur when exiting Outlook.
  3. Fixed a bug that could cause Outlook to exit when you opened the NewsHound subscriptions dialog.

1.0.1.14 - 5/20/04

  1. Removed a warning message that would appear if a newsgroup server listed the same newsgroup multiple times when NewsHound was retrieving a list of newsgroup descriptions.
  2. If a communications error occurred, the send/receive window would display "no error description available" on Windows 98/ME
  3. Fixed a problem where the < and > characters appeared in the quoted name part of an email adddress.
  4. Fixed a problem with line wrapping in the quoted part of a reply under certain conditions
  5. Articles containing multipart/alternative, text/x-rtf parts were being stored as attachments, rather than being displayed as text. In some cases, the text/plain part was not being displayed at all.
  6. Fixed some cosmetic issues in the subscriptions dialog when running Outlook 2000 or 2002 on an OS that supports visual themes.
  7. Fixed a problem that caused various errors when multiple personal folders files were open under certain circumstances on Outlook 2000 and 2002.

1.0.0.12 - 5/10/04

  1. Corrected a few errors in the help file
  2. Fixed a bug that could cause an assertion failure when NewsHound checks to see if any new newsgroups are available, and you have not subscribed to any newsgroups yet
